Christian Ministries Internships

Gain practical knowledge and valuable experience through internship experiences. Internships are required for all majors within the Christian Ministries Department.

School-of-Theology-and-Ministry

The Christian Ministries Department offers four types of field experience and internship courses. We believe it is essential for our students to do ministry under the supervision of a mentor so they can apply classroom learning in a safe and supporting environment. Students also complete internship assignments to help them reflect on what they are learning in the field and receive support from their Northwestern professor.

Christian Service (MIN1641-44) courses are one-credit courses that can be completed by students who want to receive college credit for their work in a ministry or nonprofit context. These courses are essentially pre-internship courses.

Ministry Internship (MIN4991-92) courses are two-credit courses that are required of all non- ICS ministry majors. Students normally complete internships during their senior year or the summer before graduation. The department has a large network of partner churches and works with Career Development to help students find suitable internships. Students may also complete their ministry internship requirements for the Camp and Conference Center Administration concentration through an educational partnership with Forest Springs Camp & Conference Center.

Intercultural Studies Internship (ICS4991-94) courses are two-credit courses that are required in the Intercultural Studies major and can be completed in fulfillment of the ICS minor. Students normally complete internships during their junior or senior year. The department leads cross-cultural internship trips and partners with missions and nonprofit organizations to help students find suitable internships.

Graduate Internships (MIN5993U-94U) courses are one-credit graduate courses completed by undergraduate students in an accelerated graduate degree program. These courses provide students with the opportunity to complete an additional two credits of field experience before graduating with their undergraduate degree. The Master of Divinity then requires an additional four credits of field experience before completion of the M.Div.
