Interested in pursuing a music major? The online Music Audition Application is required for new students who plan to major in music and also serves as the application for music scholarship consideration for all students, regardless of their major.

Application and Audition Process

Music is a dual admission program. Students must be admitted to both Northwestern and the Department of Music & Theatre in order to major in music. The University of Northwestern – St. Paul is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

2023–2024 Audition Days

  • Saturday, November 11, 2023
  • Monday, February 19, 2024 (Presidents’ Day)
  • Saturday, February 24, 2024
  • Saturday, April 13, 2024

After April 13, scholarship audition applications may be accepted on a rolling basis as funds allow.

1. Complete the Music Audition Application.

Click here to tell us about yourself and upload your performance videos. Use the Music Audition Repertoire guidance sheet to help you select or create recordings that will best showcase your musical strengths.

2. Watch for communication about the results of your application. If you are invited for an in-person audition, select your date and time slot.

3. Audition on campus. (Virtual auditions may be arranged by request.)

  • Perform for faculty, either the same pieces you submitted with your application or new ones, and demonstrate your skills in sight reading and technique.
  • Meet faculty and discuss your goals with them.
  • Learn more about what it’s like to be a music student at Northwestern by attending a current student recital and Q & A session and talking informally with current students.
  • Explore our music facilities and tour campus.
  • You may also choose to attend an Admissions event or Theatre production, as available. Indicate your interest when you schedule your audition.
    • November 10 Fine Arts Visit Event: Attend a choir or band rehearsal, have dinner with music faculty, and attend a performance of the musical theatre production Anastasia before your audition on November 11.
    • February 18 Icebreaker Admissions Event: Learn about UNW, have dinner with music faculty, and participate in a worship night before your audition on February 19.
    • February 24 Musical Theatre Performance: Attend a matinee performance of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown after your audition on February 24.
