Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna of the Year
Purpose
Each year the University of Northwestern recognizes alumnus/alumna who have demonstrated God-honoring leadership in the home, church, community, and in his/her profession.
Selection Criteria
The Alumni Council is seeking nominees for consideration who meet the following criteria:
- Distinguished leadership and service to the community
- Demonstrated leadership and service to humanity
- Distinguished achievement in his/her profession
- Actively involved in a church/ministry community.
- Attended Northwestern for a minimum of the academic equivalent of one year
- Ongoing commitment to the mission and vision of the University of Northwestern
Selection Process
- A Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award may be awarded annually at the discretion of the Alumni Council, with administration approval.
- The members of the Alumni Council and the Alumni Director will select the recipient, with the president's approval.
- If possible, the candidate must plan to spend a day on campus, speaking in chapel and be able to accept the award in person at a public presentation program.
- The Alumni Council is inviting all members of Northwestern Alumni to submit nominees to be considered for the award.
Buckles-Hanna Service Award
Purpose
Each year the University of Northwestern recognizes and honors an individual who was or is currently a member of the University of Northwestern community (i.e. faculty, staff, administration, and volunteers) and who has given outstanding service to the Northwestern community, its mission and vision.
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated leadership and service to the University of Northwestern
- Actively involved in a church/ministry community.
- Ongoing commitment to the mission and vision of the University of Northwestern
Selection Process
- The Service Award may be awarded annually at the discretion of the Alumni Council.
- Recognition is extended to the person who has served quietly and faithfully, as well as to those who are widely recognized for their contributions (financial or otherwise).
- The members of the Alumni Council and the Alumni Director will select the recipient, with the president’s approval.
- If possible, the candidate must plan to spend a day on campus and be able to accept the award in person at a public presentation program.
- The Alumni Council is inviting past and present faculty, staff, administration and volunteers of Northwestern to submit nominees to be considered for the award.
Athletic Hall of Fame
Purpose
Recognizes those individuals who best exhibit the integrity and Christian commitment that exemplify University of Northwestern and the Athletic Department. Former players, coaches, groups, and other individuals who have made significant contributions and brought honor to the athletic program are eligible for selection to the Athletic Hall of Recognition.
Objectives
- Give lasting recognition to outstanding individuals or groups of University of Northwestern.
- Serve as a reminder to students and the public of those people who have been instrumental in creating the athletic tradition at University of Northwestern.
- Promote continuing interest in the Athletic Department.
- Establish a public relations vehicle to further enhance relations between the Alumni, Athletic Department, College, and all its constituencies.
Criteria for Induction and Continuing Recognition
- Evidence of a continuing commitment to the claims of Christ in their life.
- The athlete must be a letter winner as reflected in official college records.
- The athlete must have graduated from Northwestern or attended a minimum of four (4) full-time semesters at Northwestern (full-time defines as at least twelve (12) credits per semester).
- Former athletes must be at least five (5) years removed from Northwestern.
- No more than four (4) individuals or groups will be selected to the Athletic Hall of Recognition each year.
- Under extreme circumstances and when necessary, the committee holds the authority and will convene to remove an inductee from the Athletic Hall of Recognition.
Other Considerations
- Athletic excellence as evidenced by special honors, awards, or recognition
- Academic achievement
Nominations
Nominations will be accepted from alumni, current and former employees of Northwestern. For the Athletic Hall of Fame, nominations will be accepted from others who have a special interest in Northwestern athletics.
Persons nominated but not selected will continue to be considered each succeeding year. While nominations are accepted at any time, nominations will need to meet a certain deadline to qualify for a particular year. Award recipients are honored each year at Homecoming. Nominations should include as much supporting evidence as possible and include church, community, vocation, and service to UNW and Northwestern Alumni information.

The Selection Committee will convene in the spring to select inductees for the successive Homecoming and depending on the award consideration, will consist of some or all of the following: Director of Alumni & Parent Engagement, Faculty Representative in appropriate field of study; Athletic Director, Associate Athletic Director, a Faculty Athletic Representative, two (2) to three (3) current members of the Northwestern Athletic staff; and the Vice President of Advancement.
Music & Theatre Hall of Recognition
Purpose
Criteria
- Nominees must evidence a continuing commitment to the claims of Christ in his/her life.
- UNW Alumni Nominees:
- must have graduated from UNW or attended a minimum of 4 full time semesters (6 full time quarters) Full time is defined as at least 12 credits
- must have been a music or theatre major
- must be at least 10 years removed from UNW
- must have a proven track record of excellence in music or theatre performance/production, education, and/or leadership
- Non-Alumni Nominees: Non-UNW alumni may be nominated for their service to the UNW Department of Music & Theatre
- No one serving on the Selection Committee may be selected to receive this award while serving on the committee
- Under extreme circumstances and when necessary, the Selection Committee holds the authority to convene to remove an inductee from the Music & Theatre Hall of Recognition.
Selection Process
- The Selection Committee will convene in the spring to select inductees for the following Homecoming. The Committee will consist of:
- Chair of the Department of Music & Theatre
- Director of Alumni & Parent Engagement
- Three members of the Music & Theatre faculty
- The Selection Committee holds the authority to not make an award in a given year, and no more than two persons will be elected in any given year to the Music & Theatre Hall of Recognition.
Nominations
Nominations will be accepted from alumni, current and former employees of UNW, and others who have a special interest in music at UNW. Nominations will be accepted year-round, and a decision to place someone in the Hall of Recognition will be made by May 1 of each year for the following year. Persons nominated but not selected will continue to be considered each succeeding year. Nomination Deadline is in April, see Music Events for details. Nominations must be made in writing and should include as much supporting evidence as possible.
