Yvonne RB-Banks, Ed.D.

Adjunct Instructor

Prior to coming to Northwestern in the fall of 1998, Dr. Yvonne RB-Banks worked in the public school system for approximately 17 years. RB-Banks started her professional career by using her training as a teacher to work with students placed in special education. Over the course of her career she has been a classroom teacher, team lead and district coordinator for special programs. RB-Banks, in addition to her teaching responsibilities in the core curriculum, coordinates the Special Education Minor program. Her primary field of research has been on the population of students labeled with emotional/behavioral disordered and specific learning disabilities needs, and the impact of such placements on their academic experiences. In addition to studying the academic outcomes for the special needs populations, RB-Banks often researches and presents on how cultural norms influence the learning experiences for children from diverse backgrounds, especially African-American males. RB-Banks holds professional memberships in the Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABWHE-Minnesota Chapter); the Minnesota Association for Continuing Adult Education (MACAE); the Midwest Educators of Color Association (MECA); and the Minnesota Association on Higher Education and Disability (MN-AHEAD).

Since coming to UNW RB-Banks has designed and implemented several programs to support special needs students entering college and needing support services in associated with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). RB-Banks has a special interest in the academic needs of students from diverse backgrounds who attend college as first generation students and has designed a program to meet this population's needs as well. She used her interests in designing programs to create the DOSS program for students with special needs entering college. Over the past decade, the service design has expanded and now the Center for Programs and Support Services (CAPSS) allows non-ADA students to access academic support services more efficiently.
