ST. PAUL, Minn., August 28, 2024 – Today, University of Northwestern – St. Paul places a strong and steady flag in the ground with the unveiling of its new university tagline, “We are UNWavering.” It’s a clever, yet impactful, play on words with the first three letters of unwavering capitalized to represent the more casual abbreviation for the university, UNW. With this new tagline, Northwestern proclaims its unwavering commitment to a Scriptural foundation and its mission to develop future leaders who will carry those biblical truths into their homes, churches communities and the world.
Throughout its 122-year history, Northwestern has been centered on unwavering values founded on the Bible. It’s Declaration of Christian Community outlines Northwestern’s desire to honor Christ, strive for Christ-centered community, be set apart, exercise responsible freedom, establish community without borders, and hold to these covenants.
Northwestern was founded in 1902 as Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School located at First Baptist Church in Minneapolis. In 1935, Northwestern expanded by adding Northwestern Theological Seminary with the intention to provide a conservative alternative to other schools in the area. In 1949, the second president of the university, Rev. Billy Graham, launched the radio station, 98.5 (KTIS), an uplifting voice spreading the mission of Christ in the Twin Cities. Through the decades, Northwestern continued to grow as an established institution in the metro all while holding fast to the values at the heart of Northwestern’s mission. In 2013, Northwestern College officially became University of Northwestern – St. Paul.
In 2022, Dr. Corbin Hoornbeek joined Northwestern as the ninth president. Just days ago, in his State of the Organization address to faculty, staff and students, Hoorbeek explained UNWavering, stating that, “When we say UNWavering, we’re putting a stake in the ground. Nothing else we do matters if we waver. Unwavering is a word that will hold us accountable to His Scripture and teachings. UNWavering begins and ends with God – not us.”
“We are UNWavering” is more than a tagline, it is lived out by Northwestern’s faculty, staff, and students. This message extends beyond what is put on a billboard or banner. It deeply influences all of life at Northwestern. It means that we have an unwavering love for God’s Word and an unwavering love for God’s world.
Starting with its first chapel series this semester, UNWavering Grace: A Galatians Study, students will be reminded of the truth that their justification comes not through works, but by faith alone.
