Before coming to Northwestern, Susan taught for the past 37 years in the Osseo Area Schools at Palmer Lake, Edinbrook, and Fernbrook Elementary Schools before retiring last year. Now, Susan is using her talents as a sub within schools with the greatest need. She specialized in helping struggling readers close the gap. She has also designed children’s courses for remedial and enrichment in summer school programs.

Her personal teaching philosophy is that relationships and community are key starting points. While routines and structure are helpful, so is flexibility and creativity. Student choice and relevance matter for engagement. Discovery and direct teaching are both important. She also encourages teachers to enlist the help of other adults in the mighty work for teaching. She truly believes it is a privilege to have a class of student call you their teacher!

Outside of school, Susan enjoys quilting, baking, reading, traveling, music (piano and handbells), and helping others. She and her husband John have two daughters, Jenny and Jackie, and two son-in-laws, Jake and Ryan. Susan is also involved in her church, Mill City Church where she helps out with music and skit-writing.
