Weily Grina-Shay (“Way-lee”) is a clarinetist passionate about chamber music, education, and making music accessible to communities of all backgrounds.
She is the co-founder of 10th Wave Chamber Music Collective, a chamber music organization that seeks to curate innovative concert programs to connect and engage with new audiences in the Twin Cities. 10th Wave also seeks to remove traditional barriers to accessing classical music by performing music by historically underrepresented composers in a comfortable and familiar venue at no cost to audience members. 10th Wave has been the recipient of multiple MRAC and MSAB grants that have allowed them to bring new music to concert halls, outdoor venues, and music festivals. Weily will be performing with 10th Wave as MPR Class Notes Artist in their 2021–22 season.
Weily was previously a member of Chione Quintet from 2018–21, an all-female woodwind quintet based in the Twin Cities. With Chione, Weily has performed in various venues such as Icehouse Minneapolis, the Current’s 2018 Rock the Cradle event, and as Courtroom Concert Artists at the Schubert Club. With Chione, Weily has toured around all over Minnesota in various libraries performing “Story Time with Chione,” an educational program pairing music with narrated stories to children of all ages. Chione was also selected to be a part of MPR’s Class Notes seasons in 2018 and 2020.
In addition to her love for performing, Weily enjoys teaching and spreading the joy of learning music. Weily is currently the Adjunct Clarinet Instructor at two universities and has taught at Wayzata High School. She has also presented clinics at Anoka, Centennial, and St. Louis Park High School.
Weily received her Master of Music degree at the Peabody Institute of Music studying under Anthony McGill in May 2016 where she was awarded the Martha and William Bill Memorial Prize in Clarinet. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music studying under Ixi Chen in December 2013.
Weily currently resides in Spring Lake Park, MN, with her husband, young daughter, and calico cat; where she is currently attempting to grow a vegetable garden.
