Overview

University of Northwestern – St. Paul (Northwestern) offers a variety of programs that lead to professional licensure within the state of Minnesota. These programs are designed to meet the educational requirements set by Minnesota’s licensing boards. However, licensure requirements can vary significantly from state to state.

Northwestern is committed to providing accurate and current information regarding licensure requirements for its programs. Per the U.S. Department of Education regulation 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), we are required to disclose whether our programs meet the educational requirements for professional licensure in any state or U.S. territory. The information provided on this page is intended to help prospective and current students understand the licensure requirements for their chosen program.

Students planning to pursue licensure outside of Minnesota should consult with the appropriate licensing agencies to verify requirements. These requirements may include additional coursework, professional examinations, background checks, work experience, and other criteria. Northwestern will work collaboratively with students to ensure they are informed about and can meet licensure requirements in their intended states of practice.

Nursing Program

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Northwestern prepares students for the NCLEX-RN® examination, which is required for licensure as a registered nurse. Completion of the BSN program is a necessary requirement but does not guarantee eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN® Examination. Eligibility is determined by the respective state board of nursing.

Accreditation: The BSN program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

State Licensure Requirements: Students should consult the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) website for information on state-specific licensure requirements and links to all state boards of nursing.

Education Programs

Teacher Licensure Programs

Northwestern offers several programs that prepare students for teacher licensure in Minnesota. These programs include:

• Communication Arts/Literature Education (Grades 5–12)

• Elementary Education (K–6)

• English as a Second Language (ESL) Education

• Mathematics Education (Grades 5–12)

• Music Education

• Physical Education & Heath

• Social Studies Education (Grades 5–12)

Students who successfully complete these programs and meet Minnesota teacher licensure requirements are eligible to apply to the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) for licensure. For those seeking licensure in other states, it is often required that candidates first obtain licensure in Minnesota. Additional state-specific requirements may apply.

Criminal Justice Program

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

The Criminal Justice program educates students in the fundamental concepts, knowledge, and skills of the criminal justice system. While the program provides a strong foundation, additional certification or licensure may be required for certain positions within the field of criminal justice.

State Licensure Requirements: Prospective students should check with the appropriate state board or agency for specific licensure requirements applicable to criminal justice professionals.
