About the School
The mission of the School of Business is Cultivating Christ-like character, compassion, and excellence in future business leaders. We emphasize mastery of the subject matter built upon a foundation of compassion, consideration, creativity, courage, and conscientiousness in how students interact with peers, colleagues, family, community, and the world.
Majors available within the School of Business are Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, and Marketing. Every student also selects a concentration, providing additional specialization within the major.
Reasons to Pursue your Business Degree at Northwestern
We equip students to be God-honoring leaders in business and in life. Our business curriculum, taught with a Biblical worldview, gives students a well-rounded foundation with core courses in accounting, spreadsheets, business analysis, business law, ethics, management, marketing, and professional skills. After completing major and concentration specific courses, our students are prepared to be critical-thinkers, ready contributors, and lights in the marketplace.
In addition to a business degree, students will also develop the character and leadership qualities needed to thrive in business by integrating biblical principles and ethics in all courses. Learning from professors active in their field, students apply concepts and develop problem-solving skills through experiential learning projects.
The School of Business is very intentional about equipping students for the transition from college to career, creating opportunities for them to practice professional skills and apply them. Students build their professional and career competencies for the required internship capstone from day one. Professor advisors work with the on-site internship supervisor to assess the student’s career and social readiness. This assessment becomes part of the student’s ongoing professional development.
As a core philosophy of the School of Business, courses are taught by professors with relevant marketplace experience in their field of instruction. It is critical that our students develop hands-on competencies – skills that can only be taught by professionals who have done the work themselves. Professors will know and teach about the latest conversations, trends, opportunities, and obstacles in the industry.
Many universities use advisors who are curriculum specialists who know the rotation of courses but not the course content and workload. At Northwestern, students are assigned to a full-time business professor as their advisor who regularly meets with them to map out future semesters, understanding the nuances of coursework and the student’s capacity. The professor advisor is also a mentor who is available to talk to students about their goals, career hopes, and readiness.
The School of Business surrounds students with multi-faceted academic, social, and emotional support. Alongside professors who have open door policies or office hours, additional academic support includes student tutors, teaching assistants (non-instructional), and Academic Achievement and Student Life offices who offer academic, emotional, mental, or environmental support as needed.
Building relationships is a key component in leadership – a character trait and competency that requires practice. Within the School of Business, there are many opportunities for students to get connected and to practice servant leadership, such as participation in or leadership of:
- Student Clubs (i.e, accounting, women in leadership, pre-law)
- Peer Mentorship (matching student with an alum for professional mentorship)
- Career Champions (investing in fellow students navigating their first steps into career readiness)
- Student Business Board (organizing student events, hosting business-specific chapels, networking)
